Soccer Mom
Review by: Amanda

“Soccer Mom” starring Missi Pyle and Emily Osment explores the relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter in the wake of an accident that took the life of her husband. This premise may seem depressing, but the movie is actually a comedy. The laughs come when Becca’s (Osment’s) mother decides to impersonate a famous Italian (and male) soccer player in order to prevent her daughter from facing more disappointment.

Wendy (Pyle) works in a hair salon, forced to quit her more fun, but less lucrative, job as a professional dancer, when she lost her husband. She is a single mom raising three kids, the oldest of which plays on a girls soccer team who is losing their coach and is in desperate need of a good one. When the chance for the team to be coached by her daughter’s idol falls through, Wendy takes matters into her own hands, enlisting the help of her make-up artist friend to turn her into the Italian athlete.

Now, the movie does feature some typical close calls between the daughter and disguised mother, as well as other parents of girls on the soccer team. It makes up for the typical though by these interactions being utterly hilarious. There is no way you can watch Missy Pyle pretend to be a man and fake an accent all the while pretending to know about the sport her daughter loves and not laugh. She nails all of her lines and her facial expressions, even when in full make-up, are so entertaining. Emily Osment also does a great job as the angst ridden teenage girl whose icy exterior slowly thaws as the movie goes on.

I won’t give away the ending, but I am sure most people would be able to figure it out within the first few minutes of the movie. Even with the predictability, the movie is far from boring. The script and the acting make it a fun and, at times, heartfelt story that your entire family can enjoy.
