The Island Review:
By Kat

Plan your escape.

Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) is a resident of a seemingly utopian but contained facility in 2019. Like all of the inhabitants of this carefully controlled environment, Lincoln hopes to be chosen to go to the "The Island" - reportedly the last uncontaminated spot on the planet. When his best friend Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johannson) wins the lottery to go to 'The Island' Lincoln sets out to answer some questions regarding his existance and soon finds that everything he's ever known is a lie. He and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are actually human clones whose only purpose is to provide "spare parts" for their original human counterparts. Going to 'The Island' is really a one way trip that ends in death. Lincoln makes a daring escape with a Jordan. Relentlessly pursued by the forces of the sinister institute that once housed them, Lincoln and Jordan engage in a race for their lives to find their sponsers (the people they're cloned after) and tell them the truth about their existance.

The Island is a fantastic adventure with a strong plot that unlike many actually films raises real ethical questions regarding cloning.

The lead characters develop during the course of the film from naive children (they are really only three and four years old and are only educated to the degree of a 15-year-old, with great naivety due to their sheltered existence) to be strong heroes. Their love story in the film is subtle and unusual with a truly innocent beginning, (before entering the real world they knew nothing of sex and had strict rules regarding proximity).

The action sequences are breathtaking with fantastic camera angles and unique visual effects. The characters do survive a few circumstances they really shouldn't have which adds a slight element of non reality to the film but really this exists in most every action film. In the facility they grew in Jordan and Lincoln were kept on a strict diet, they are truly in peak physical condition.

The film incorporates subtle humour, soon after escaping the faciliy the two are passed by a motorbike, Jordan asks what it was and Lincoln with a somewhat dream expression "I dunno. But I want one!". Perhaps one of the best movie lines in recent years is heard during their escape "He has a female product in tow"

Overall 'The Island' is a fantastic summer blockbuster you're bound to enjoy! The film is more then two hours long and you definitely get your money worth. Must see!
