Walk the Line Reviews

Review #1 - By Laura

Walk the Line (named after Johnny Cash's song "I Walk the Line") is based on the life of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) and his romance with June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). The film gets a slow start by revealing a childhood accident and showing his troubled relationship with his father. The film then shows Cash walking off to military school. While serving in the army, he begins writing songs and romancing his hometown sweetheart, Vivian Cash. After military duty, Johnny returns home to his bride and attempts at a music career. Cash auditions for owner of Sun Records, Sam Phillips. Next thing you know, Johnny is touring with rock legends Elvis Presely and Jerry Lee Lewis. On the tour he meets June Carter, his next bride. They take a liking to each other, but Carter refuses to take any serious advances. The film also shows Johnny's fall when he develops a serious drug addiction, which with that and fame take it's toll on his marriage to Vivian. The film then shows Johnny's rise again going to where the film first opens, a jail house with the criminals cheering Johnny on.

An Oscar contender in every way! Joaquin Phoenix delivers a stunning interpretation of the legendary singer. Phoenix and Witherspoon both stun the audience by doing their own singing. Does anybody see a Best Picture Oscar nomination? I sure do!!

Review #2 - By Kat

Walk the Line has won numerous accolades, at my writing this review both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon have been awarded Golden Globes for their performances and both have been nominated for Oscars.

The film is beautifully written, depicting the era, and the highlights and lows of fame in a poignant way. The imagery is beautiful, the costumes, the vintage cars, right down to the 50's microphones.

The performances from the films principal cast are most definitely Oscar worthy. You forget Reese's 'Legally Blonde' past and totally believe her to be the loudm, funny, southern belle June Carter and Joaquin's performance is calculated and subtle but entirely believable. Both actors did all their own singing in the film which is another amazing feat. The music is of course, fantastic.

Overall this is an inspiring true story and a beauty of filmmaking. Definitely worth seeing!

If any of you are in the mood to see a movie filled with exquisite cinemetography, amazing acting, and a ticket back in time to the old days, you should most definately rent this film! It is the best movie I have seen in a while, and I believe that Joaquin Phoenix was robbed of his oscar. The performances by the actors are awesome, and the gorgeous actress Reese Witherspoon leaves you inspired and makes you smile at times. This story is heartfelt and in every way entertaining! Great country music of course by Johnny Cash, June Carter, and even Elvis who is portrayed by Tyler Hilton. The soundtrack is great and so is this film, so if you haven't already, go see it!
